The
Newport Academy of Ballet believes that every person can benefit from
exposure to dance. We know that we must first teach a love of movement
before we can teach the art form. Our youngest students begin with
free flowing creative movement classes followed by Pre-Ballet. More
formal training begins at the age of six. The Academy offers classes
for all ages and skill levels in ballet, pointe, jazz and tap. There
are many opportunities to gain performance experience for those who
are interested, including a non-mandatory end of year performance.
Parents and friends are invited to observe class every eight weeks.
Miki Ohlsen founded the Newport Academy of Ballet in 1979 after completing
her education in the Netherlands in performance and teaching. For
thirty years Miki and her staff of teachers have been providing dance
education of the highest quality to children and adults from all over
Rhode Island. With the Academy’s strong emphasis on classical
ballet and the study of the art form, the school has provided countless
hours of joy to those dancing for the sheer love of it and has trained
many dancers who have gone on to professional careers.
The Academy is also the official school and home of the Island Moving
Co., a critically acclaimed, professional contemporary ballet company.
Miki Ohlsen is the Artistic Director of both the company and the school.
Most of the teachers in the school are dancers in the company who
are well trained as teachers and also masters at linking the art form
to performance. The students are exposed to the professional dancers
as teachers and performers who, because of their love of the art form,
have made dance their life’s work.
